Lage
At the foot of the cliffs of the Gramat Causse beside the river Dordogne, the village of Carennac grew up around a Clunisian priory founded in the middle of the 11th century. Famous for its Romanesque tympanum and its Gothic sculpture group depicting the Entombment, the church of St. Pierre, built in the late 11th C. is at the centre of a group of monastic buildings. The portal of the primitive church has carved capitals decorated with fantastic animals, palmettes and interlacing. The porch, built in front of this façade, has a carved tympanum showing Christ in majesty in a mandorla surrounded by the Tetramorph (angel, eagle, lion, bull, symbols of the Evangelists) and the Apostles.
